Family business and succession planning

Structuring ownership, remuneration and succession so the business can pass to the next generation – or to a buyer – on your terms.

Succession is rarely just a tax question. It involves who should own the business, who should run it, how the family is treated fairly and how the people stepping back are provided for. We have worked with family companies through those transitions for decades, and we handle the accounting, tax and company law sides together.

Shareholders’ agreements, articles and share reorganisations are prepared within the MTM group, so the structure we recommend is the one that gets documented.

What’s included

  • Succession and exit planning, including management buy-outs and family transfers
  • Share structures for the next generation, including growth and alphabet shares
  • Inheritance tax and business property relief reviews
  • Capital gains tax planning and Business Asset Disposal Relief
  • Holding company and group structures
  • Preparing the business and its numbers for sale

How we work

Every engagement starts with a no-obligation conversation with Doug or Stephen. We then set out the scope, timings and a fixed fee in writing before any work begins, and you keep the same partner as your point of contact throughout the year.

We work from our offices at 82 King Street in Manchester city centre and Cresta House in Wilmslow, and with clients across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Common questions

When should we start planning succession?

Earlier than most owners think: three to five years ahead gives time to restructure, train successors and use reliefs properly.

Can you deal with the legal documents?

Yes. Shareholders’ agreements, articles and share changes are prepared within the MTM group alongside our tax advice.
